Gean Norman was born on January 28, 1914 in Marlinton, West Virginia, and grew up as a Baptist. She graduated college in the 1930's, at a time when that was still a rare distinction for a black woman in America, and later went on to complete a doctorate. A lifelong educator and child-advocate, she was an influential figure in local education in Columbus, Ohio. She there played an important role in racial desegregation, the formation of the "alternative" schools program and the placement of counselors in elementary schools.
