Peter was an uneducated fisherman who became one of Jesus' most important and influential disciples. Jesus described him as the "Rock," the foundation of the church, and the keeper of the keys of heaven. He was sometimes criticized because of his denial of Christ and his disputes with the Apostle Paul, yet he was the first to receive the teaching that opened the church to non-Jews, and was the founder of many of the first Christian churches. According to the Catholic tradition, Peter was the first Pope. He was later crucified, and according to legend, requested to be crucified head-down because he did feel worthy of the same death as Jesus.
