Sundar Singh was born September 3, 1889, to wealthy Sikh parents in Rampur, Patiala, North India. He was violently opposed to Christianity as a young teenager. At age fifteen he was on the verge of suicide when he experienced a powerful vision of the living Christ. He immediately converted to Christianity, and was subsequently thrown out of his home. He studied for some time at an Anglican seminary, but decided he could best preach Christianity to other Indians if he presented himself in a more familiar form. Accordingly, he took on the robes of a sádhu or holy man, and spent the rest of his life wandering from place to place, with neither money nor a permanent home, preaching the gospel wherever he went. Although baptized and trained as an Anglican, he refused to align himself with any one denomination over another. During his life he was sometimes criticized for what was seen as his excessive mysticism, yet he gained a worldwide reputation for holiness and devotion to Christ. He disappeared on a mission trip to the Himalayas of Tibet in 1929.
