Mother Teresa was born August 26, 1910, in the town of Skopje (which is now in Macedonia). She was Albanian by ethnicity. Mother Teresa was the founder of the Missionaries of Charity, an international group of nuns in service to the poorest of the poor. This group, together with numerous auxiliary organizations also founded or inspired by Mother Teresa, is currently active in Christian service in over 130 different countries around the world. Although she has recently been criticized for her friendships with dictators and her willingness to accept the political status quo, she is globally revered for her work with the poor. Her numerous honors include the 1971 Pope John XXIII Peace Prize, the 1971 Kennedy Prize, the 1972 Nehru Prize, the 1975 Albert Schweitzer International Prize, the 1979 Balzan Prize for Humanity, Peace and Brotherhood Among Peoples, the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize, and the 1980 Bharat Ratna. She was also awarded the British Order of Merit in 1983, the U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom, and the U.S. Congressional Gold Medal in 1994. She died September 5, 1997 in Kolkata (Calcutta), India.
