Sojourner Truth was born around 1797, in Ulster County, New York. She was born a slave, but reached adulthood as New York began a process of gradual emancipation. After a religious experience, she became a committed (but non-denominated) Christian, and later became an itinerant preacher, changing her name to “Sojourner Truth” to commemorate her new calling. She endured controversy early in life due to her association with an apocalyptic Christian cult, the “Kingdom of Matthias,” but later became much celebrated as a public speaker. Throughout her long life, she was an active and influential opponent of slavery and an advocate of civil rights for all people. She died November 26, 1883 in Battle Creek, Michigan.
