Desmond Tutu was born October 7, 1931, in Klerksdorp, South Africa. He was one of the first black South Africans to rise to a position of authority within the Anglican Church, eventually becoming the first black Archbishop of the region. Throughout his long career with the church, he was known both for his brave and bold statements of opposition to apartheid and for his unwavering support for non-violent solutions to his country’s problems.

Although often criticized for his social activism, he is widely respected for his consistent Christian witness against injustice. Following his retirement, he became a key figure in the peaceful transition to a post-apartheid government through his work as the head of the Truth and Reconciliation Committee. He has received many honors, including the Albert Schweitzer Prize for Humanitarianism, the 1986 Magubela Prize for Liberty, and the 2005 Gandhi Peace Prize.
